WOOL is COOL: What properties make wool a COOL textile for KIDS (recommended brands)

Qué-propiedades-hacen-que-la-lana-sea-un-tejido-IDEAL-para-bebés-y-niños-babyecochicI love wool! Today I will share with you why wool is my favorite material for babies and kids

Wool is COOL! I always have loved natural material and wool (and knitting), but I am only aware since the birth of Stella that wool amd especially merino wool is an ideal material for babies and kids. I am really in love with wool clothes for kids. it is so worthwhile to spend some more money for all the beneficial properties of wool and you can use it much longer and hand it down to other kids after using.

Since I discovered merino wool and silk bodies for babies by Engel Natur  we have not used other bodies during the cold months. I even bought wool and silk tees as underwear for the twins just recently. Stella still sleeps happily in her sleeping back filled with wool and I am still knitting a merino wool vest for her as I stated in my post about my fall to do´s.

As I said: Wool is COOL! But what kind of properties does wool make so special and appropriate for kid´s textiles?

Wool is:

Environmentally sustainable, easily degradable and produced organically with much less amount of water than cotton

Hypoallergenic as dust mites as major cause of allergies do not like wool.

Naturally fire resistant: This is a very important point as most of the people are not aware that loads of highly toxic chemicals are applied on synthetic, highly inflammable petroleum-based clothes to make them more fire resistant. Those flame retardants are also widely used in mattresses, upholstered home furniture, carpets, plastic toys and foam-stuffed animals and can be found widely in the blood of children and adults alike although little children are more on risk as they mouth everything.

Temperature regulating and a natural UV-protection shield: Renowned for its warmth but it has also been worn for centuries by Bedouin tribes of the Sinai desert where there is extreme heat and sun. Keeps you warm when cold, and cool when hot. Most important for babies that still cannot regulate efficiently their own body temperature.

Water repellent: Wool fiber is capable of absorbing up to a third of its dry weight in moisture, the content of lanolin repels liquids naturally. The skin underneath will not feel wet and cold when wool wets due to their insulation properties. It will take longer to get a flu…

Ultralight insulator even used for natural house insulation

Long lasting: Can be bent 20,000 times before breaking. By comparison, a cotton fibre will break after 3,000 times and silk after just 2,000. This means wool garments not only last longer, but also retain their appearance for a longer period. Your friends and family will be looking forward to your hand-me-downs…

Mildew resistant and anti-microbial: Wool fibers have a natural water wicking property that prevents moisture from being retained in the fabric. Besides keeping the skin dry, this quality also naturally inhibits mildew. Wool also has natural anti-microbial properties because bacteria tend to be attracted to smooth positively charged surfaces like those of synthetic fibers rather than the scaly, neutrally charged surface of wool fiber. Hospital studies have shown that bacterial colonies are common in cotton sheets while not present on Merino wool blankets subjected to the same environmental conditions.

Odor diminishing: Most synthetic fibers actually increase body odor because they create a breeding ground for bacteria. Sweat itself has no odour, but over time bacteria develop and create unpleasant odors. Wool reduces the opportunity for odors to develop because it quickly absorbs sweat (or urine in the case of woolen baby bodies) and evaporates it into the air. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool does not retain odors and will freshen just from airing out.

Stain resistant: Wool lanolin makes wool water and stain resistant. Even if stains are not wiped before drying, wool is less prone to stain than many other fabrics – ideal for kids. Wool also has a very low degree of dry-soil pick-up compared to most other fibers. One method for cleaning wool clothing is to simply brush the fabric to release soil. We do this with our sheepskin sleeping bag: it mostly stays fresh just with brushing and airing.

And if wool comes as well designed and beautiful garment as it is the case with those brands, ONE CANNOT RESIST!

I would like to recommend an online shop specialized in wool fashion for kids that offer nearly all of those brands: Mama Owl. Another beautiful online-shop (in German, but with delivery in all European countries) I recommend is wollbody.
