It’s cold outside, BABY … The importance of organic natural fibers

We’ve gone from summer to winter in a few days. Now we can finally use Stella´s new clothes I bought in Germany. .

The jersey is by FUB, a Danish brand of kids clothes. It is made out of very soft, 100% organic merino wool. You cannot imagine how soft the wool is, you want to touch it all the time. FUB has practical, honest and beautiful designs with a retro feel, very suitable for children.
Socks are by German brand gröko, made of organic wool. The jeans are from Gap, a hand-me-down of her sisters, vest by Zara. The doll is a rattle made of organic cotton that a friend living in Canada sent us as birth gift, but I do not remember the brand.
The body with violet stripes is made by the German brand Engel Natur and is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable brands you can find in the market. The onesy is made of 70% merino wool and 30% silk. This mixture ensures skin´s natural regulation of heat and moisture, and is therefore ideal for babies as they need protection and cannot yet regulate the temperature of their body easily.
Engel offers organic clothes with all existing certifications, one of the most important and recognized being GOTS . The term “organic”, “natural”, “eco” is not protected for textiles and you have to trust some reliable certification, as GOTS.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.
Only textile products that contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres can become GOTS certified. All chemical inputs such as dyestuffs and auxiliaries used must meet certain environmental and toxicological criteria. The choice of accessories is limited in accordance with ecological aspects as well. A functional waste water treatment plant is mandatory for any wet-processing unit involved and all processors must comply with minimum social criteria.
The skin is our largest organ and quite sensitive, more so in the case of babies. The skin protects the internal organs, feels caresses, pain, temperature and pressure and regulates body temperature and humidity, thus it is very important to use natural fibers for your baby (and the whole family) as it lets the skin breathe.
It is important to use organic natural fibers, especially in direct contact with the skin, for two reasons:
1.    to prevent an accumulation of heat and fluid loss, as synthetic fibers or plastic diapers can cause, because skin ventilation and the secretion of sweat to lower body temperature does not work.
2.    to prevent that  toxic chemicals enter the body.
Toxic substances can enter our body in three ways: oral, dermal or via inhaling . Everybody knows that ingesting or inhaling a toxic is bad, but the ability of the skin to absorb toxic substances are considerably underestimated.

At the end, what you put on the skin is almost like eating it, but many people are not aware of that! Think about how nicotine patches or other medicinal patches work …

Baby’s skin is very sensitive and porous and their immune system is still immature, and unfortunately there is an increasing trend of having skin problems such as atopic dermatitis which can be caused by these toxics. Pediatrics and dermatologists recommend biological natural fiber clothing for premature infants and children who already have problems with atopic skin, so it will not be irritated more.

Mothers want the best for their precious baby, but there is lack of information.

Share it, if you find it interesting and helpful to create more awareness!
